Eagan's low unemployment rate, parks system and large employers were all cited as factors in the city's ranking this year. The city was one of four Minnesota locations to make the list, including Eden Prairie, Woodbury and Lakeville. In 2006, Eagan was ranked 12, and in 2010 the city dropped to 17th. Money Magazine ranks cities with a population of 50,000 and over every two years.

Just a 20-minute commute from Minneapolis and St. Paul, Eagan is often seen as a bedroom community. But there are a lot of people who commute to Eagan too, to work for large firms like Thomson Reuters, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Coca-Cola. That's helped keep the unemployment rate here well below the national average. Granted, Minnesota winters are brutal, but Eagan residents make up for it during the summer, spending time in the hundreds of lakes and parks that dot the city, as well as at , Minnesota's largest outdoor water park.

In a press release, Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire lauded the city's ranking.

“We’re proud to once again be in the Top 20,” Maguire wrote. "Year-in and year-out, Eagan is a consistent top performer."

“We know the points of emphasis shift from year to year on the Best Cities list, so that is why it is especially gratifying for Eagan to again be ranked with the best of the best,” said Eagan City Administrator Tom Hedges wrote in the release.
