Legislative Update - December 20, 2013
The holiday season is in full swing and I hope all of you will have a chance to visit with friends and family. This is easily one of my favorite times of the year: the snow, the decorations, the music, the events, and the family traditions are something I treasure every year.
As always, please be safe out there when you’re traveling. Happy Holidays!

The Minnesota unemployment rate fell 0.2 percent in November to a seasonally adjusted 4.6 percent, according to figures released today by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). The U.S. unemployment rate was 7 percent in November.
Private sector employment in Minnesota climbed by 2,400 in November and was revised upward by another 2,300 jobs from October. Minnesota has gained 39,800 jobs over the past year, a growth rate of 1.4 percent.
Our economy continues to show signs of growth, but we know we have more work to do. By continuing to work together and focusing on middle-class priorities, we can keep our state on firm footing and set the stage for strong and lasting economic success.

Stay Warm Minnesota Website
Minnesotans who have a tough time staying warm and safe this winter-heating season are encouraged to get information on the Stay Warm Minnesota web page at the Minnesota Department of Commerce website.
Helpful information on the Stay Warm Minnesota site includes financial assistance, energy efficiency, and heating safety programs provided by the federal and state government, private industry, nonprofits, and energy utilities. Links to nonprofit organizations and government sites are listed, along with publications and tips for saving energy.
For instance, information under “Finding Financial Assistance” describes the Cold Weather Rule and how customers can prevent having their heat turned off if they agree to and keep a payment plan with their utility. It also tells how consumers can apply with the state’s Energy Assistance Program, their utility, and charitable organizations to receive financial assistance to help pay their heating bills.
No Minnesotan should have to go without heat during our tough winters, regardless of financial situation. This website is a great resource to help Minnesotans ensure they stay warm this winter.
The Stay Warm Minnesota web page can be accessed online at http://mn.gov/commerce/energy/topics/resources/Stay-Warm-Minnesota/.
