Jim Kowalski, 67, died of injuries suffered during the incident. He was on a fishing trip in Canada at the time of the accident, WCCO reports.
According to the company's website, Kowalski and his wife Mary Anne opened their first European-style market in St. Paul in the early 1980s. The upscale grocer's growth took off in the early 2000s, beginning with a store in Woodbury and ending with a market in Eagan, which opened in 2008.
Currently, there are nine Kowalski's Markets in the Twin Cities region.
