Eagan Police Officers Share Halloween Safety Tips with Kids

The officers were at Red Pine Elementary to talk with 3rd and 4th graders.

Three Eagan police officers were at Red Pine Elementary to visit with 3rd and 4th graders on Monday.

Officers Ben Koenke, Joe Moseng, and Paul Kuehnast (as McGruff) spoke to the students about Halloween safety and handed out candy and baseball cards to the kids. There was also a time for the students to share their own tips.

A couple of the tips the third graders shared were: don't take take someone else's candy and don't damage Halloween decorations.

Some of the tips the officers shared:

  • Be careful around carved pumpkins because there might be a flame,
  • Be mindful of other people's dogs because the animals could become afraid of the costumes,
  • Remember good manners
  • Have fun

Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, Eagan police officers have been visiting elementary schools in Eagan to help kids feel comfortable around them.

They visit about once a month, said Officer Joe Moseng. Next month they will try to visit a different grade level, Officer Ben Koenke said.

The officers will be visiting schools through Wednesday.
