Deerwood Elementary Student Winner in Naming Contest for Police Canine

Tess Adam's suggestion was chosen from a field of roughly 1,700 entries after the Eagan Police Department asked local students for help naming the new police dog.

Deerwood Elementary School third-grader Tess Adam beat out 1,700 other entrants in the Eagan Police Department's contest to name a new police dog.

Police announced on Friday that they picked Adam's suggestion, "Badger", from a host of entries submitted by local students. Eagan Police Chief Jim McDonald made the announcement in a letter to Deerwood Elementary School Principal Miles Haugen.

"The response was overwhelming as practically every elementary school had some level of participation," McDonald wrote. On Jan. 20, the department put the initial call out to local students for naming suggestions. As the winner, Adam will receive a special visit and demonstration from one of the department's canine teams.

The department added the new canine, a Belgian Shepherd, to their roster earlier this winter, after a timely donation from the Eagan Citizen's Crime Prevention Association enabled them to purchase the dog.
