VIDEO: Red Cross Recruits Fresh Blood at Eagan High School

The American Red Cross expected as many as 200 students to attend an annual Blood Drive at Eagan High School on Monday.

High school and college students account for as much as 20 percent of the blood collected by the American Red Cross, according to Red Cross spokeswoman Sue Gonsior.

And that's why blood drives, like the one held on Monday at , are so important, Gonsior said. The Red Cross expected as many as 200 students to attend the blood drive held in the school's gym on Monday morning. The event is organized in part by student volunteers like Maddie Banz and Jill Haugan.

For junior Tony Sarne, the blood drive was an opportunity to follow in his father's footsteps.

"I've done donating because my Dad has donated eight gallons, and I decided that this was a good opportunity to pass on the torch," Sarne said.
